John Crompton was born January 5th, 1797 during the French Revolution, in Near Bolton, Middle Hulton, Lancashire, England, to William Crompton and Betty Gibson-Crompton. That year, London haberdasher John Hetherington, often incorrectly credited as the inventor of it, wears a silk top hat in public and attracts a large crowd of onlookers. He is later fined £500 for causing a public nuisance.

Ann Stones was born 10/02/1807 Farnworth, Dean Parish, Lancashire, England to Simon Stones (b. 6/05/1779), and Mary Hardman-Stones (b. 7/03/1785). The 1807 Slave Trade Act becomes law, abolishing the slave trade in the British Empire. John married Ann and the two had twelve children.
