Alfred Crompton was born in 1852 Lancashire, England, to James Crompton and Lucy Chadwick-Crompton. King's Cross Station opens that year, the largest in Europe at the time. Also that year, the new Palace of Westminster opens in Britain.

Alfred married Sarah Cryer in 1876, the year Alexander Graham Bell is granted a patent for an invention he calls the telephone.

Alfred and Sarah had at least one child, a son.
