Walter Richard Barr was born February 2nd, 1907 in Shackelford, Missouri, to Charles Thomas Barr and Harriette C. Thompson-Barr. He is the third generation Barr to have kept the Thomas J. Barr and Mary Grant-Barr farm in our family. Walter set up a sawmill on the farm and two of the barns were built with logs from the farm. The barns, which contain 12 and 16 inch boards, are still standing. One of the barns was for cattle and had a corn crib in the middle of it, and the other was built for horses. Walter raised livestock, cows, hogs, and chickens on the farm.

According to the Tuesday, January 22, 2008 Marshall Democrat-News, by Marcia Gorrell, Staff Writer, their son Wayne reminisces "They were all livestock farms in those days." His father milked cows until about 1965 and the family sold the cream.

Walter married Mary Evelyn Cromley, and the two had four children. "My mother was always popular at family reunions," Wayne said, because the family had "real butter and cream," which they produced on the farm. "When she brought a cake, it was rich," he added. Walter and Mary Barr resided on the farm until shortly before their deaths in 1998.
