STEELY DAN

"Dirty Work"

Gary & Theresa Barr's adventures with
Steely Dan

Denver, CO - October 29th, 2009

Brett's got people. "Hey, G - do you and Theresa wanna' go see Steely Dan Thursday night with me and Laura? Got us some backstage passes."
"Oh, I don't know. Have your people call my people".
"Theresa, we're going out with the band".
"On a school night"?

Aww, hell, here we go again... Steely Dan. Jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop, the way only Walter Becker and Donald Fagen can. Becker plays bass and lead guitar on every track, while Fagen adds piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizers, and percussion on top of his vocals. The two have made an entire career doing this. Top tens. Grammys. 2001 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees.

Our friend Brett Hampton went to school with guitarist Jon Herington. Brett jokes that he spent his entire school career with Herington hitting him in the back of his head with paper wads (due to alphabetical seating in school). Herington goes on to travel the world playing guitar for Bette Middler. Becker and Fagen saw his playing, and seeked him out to offer him a job with Steely Dan. How could he say no? He's been with them ever since...

We were in the 3rd day of an early blizzard when the band got to Denver for this gig. They made it, if only because they had an off day for travel between the Phoenix and Denver stops. Otherwise, it may have been an entirely different story. But, on this night, we picked up the sweet tickets and backstage passes the band had set aside for us at the will-call window, walked in and lived it up...

Really, one forgets how many great songs this band had, until you sit down and listen to these guys live for two hours. My Old School; Dirty Work; FM; Black Friday; Deacon Blues; Hey Nineteen; Do It Again; Rikki Don't Lose That Number; Reelin' In The Years; Kid Charlemagne. And more. It was a trip through time...

Afterwards, we all meeted-and-greeted, shook hands and kissed babies.

Pictured below is the photo Gary took of buddy Brett with his longtime friend and Steely Dan guitarist Jon Herington, at the after-show meet and greet. Thanks, Brett! We had a blast...

We feature here the single "Dirty Work". Steely Dan.

Times are hard

You're afraid to pay the fee
So you find yourself somebody
Who can do the job for free
When you need a bit of lovin'
Cause your man is out of town
That's the time you get me runnin'
And you know I'll be around

CHORUS:
I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work
No more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah

Light the candle
Put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early
Like a thousand times before
Like the castle in its corner
In a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble
And I stay here just the same

CHORUS

Email us that old photo of you and Elvis with your story and we'll publish your own channel on G-Radio!
