DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

August 24th-28th, 2008 - Denver, CO

Gary and Theresa Barr's adventures at the DNC

Theresa Crompton-Barr shares a laugh with friend Barack Obama who would go on to make history that November as the first African-American President of the United States of America.

Because we live in Denver, we thought we'd try to give you a pictorial view of the spectacle that is the Democratic National Convention, from the normal guy's eye, the one you didn't see on CNN. History at our doorsteps. As most of you may have guessed, when you bring a convention like this to a battleground state like Colorado, where two thirds of all registered voters are unaffiliated, all hell would break loose. You were right.

Saturday: We started our adventure checking out the packed downtown scene as it appeared the day before it all began at a friend's downtown high rise right in the middle of it all. The Secret Service was probably a little nervous when they'd pass by and see us watching from Lindsay's open window on the fourth floor above the crowd. Theresa's brother (Jim) and his girlfriend joined us later for dinner, then we all got thrown in the mix walking around amongst the throngs afterward.

Sunday: Not to be left out, the national news personalities had their opportunity to be a little nervous too, when tornados touched down just South of town Sunday afternoon. They were watching live feeds of the twisters on their monitors as they were talking on-air. Gary's buddy Curt emailed us a great photo of one of the tornados that he took from his back door that afternoon, titled "Something I found in my back yard".

Monday: Willie Nelson performed, and Ted Kennedy gave a speech. Chad and Lindsay saw the senator get out of his limo at his hotel after he addressed the nation that evening. Again, Secret Service abound...

Tuesday: One Hillary Clinton speech. One hundred arrests.

Wedsneday: Gary and Theresa Barr's Presidential Experience aboard a 60's era Air Force One, followed by the "Iraq Vets Against the War Parade" led by Rage Against The Machine's Zach De La Rosa and Tom Morello. The group walked from the Denver Coliseum they had just performed, to the Pepsi Center under close watch by riot police. The Bill Clinton speech was later that evening.

Thursday: The main event. Theresa, an enthusiastic Democrat, thrilled to get her seat to attend, witnessed Barack Obama crowd them in for his speech at Invesco Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos. Only half the 80,000 seats went to Colorado residents, and Theresa landed one of them. CNN reported that as many as 20,000 more that showed up with tickets from the Democratic headquarters were turned away when the stadium was filled. Local news denied the report. The event included bonus entertainment by "will i. am", John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Michael McDonald, and Sheryl Crow, (who had to rush off to fly to Bend, Oregon to catch up with her band for a concert that night).

"DNC Highlights" in the Sunday Denver Post recap:

[The Most Touching Moment]: "As Michelle Obama talked about her life, the camera closed in on her mother".

[The Best Line]: "John McCain may pay hundreds of dollars for his shoes, but we are the ones who will pay for his flip-flops". (N.M. Governor Bill Richardson)

[The Worst Line]: "The primary campaign generated so much heat, it increased global warming". (Bill Clinton), and

[The Most Awkward Moment]: "Hillary Clinton saying she was proud of being everything - a mother, a Democrat, an American, a senator, a supporter of Barack Obama. One thing she left out: She's also the wife of William Jefferson Clinton".

As you'll see, Theresa kept her camera busy photographing the celebrities and the speeches... Her centerist-husband Gary reminds everyone to

VOTE AS PATRIOT NOT PARTISAN
Ours is not a partisan message!

"Country matters more than Party..." (Joe Lieberman)

We'd like to congratulate President Obama, and hope you enjoy the Barr Family's DNC pictures...
Viewers note: While the majority of these photos were taken by Gary Barr and Theresa Barr, a few of them have been borrowed for effect.
